What Are Repo Sheds? Everything You Need to Know Before Buying One 🛠️

If you're in the market for a shed or portable building, chances are you've come across the term "REPO" or "repo shed." But what exactly does that mean, and is buying one a good idea?

Let’s break it down in simple terms, so you know exactly what you’re looking at — and whether a repo shed might be the right option for you.

‍

What Is a Repo Shed?

A repo shed (short for repossessed shed) is a shed or portable building that was previously sold through a Rent-to-Own (RTO) program. These programs allow customers to get a building with no credit check and pay monthly for a set term.

However, if the customer stops making payments, the Rent-to-Own company has the right to reclaim the shed, as one of the conditions of RTO is that the building must remain accessible and movable. Once it’s retrieved, the shed is returned to the manufacturer or dealer’s lot and resold as a repo.

‍

Why Are Repo Sheds Cheaper?

Repo sheds are usually sold “as-is” and without warranties, which can make them more affordable than a brand-new shed. But that doesn't always mean they're in bad shape. In fact, some repo sheds are in excellent condition — especially if the previous owner only had them for a short time or took really good care of them.

‍

âś… You might get a great deal, especially on:

  • Older sheds with minor cosmetic wear
  • Buildings where the customer paid several months before defaulting
  • Lightly used units returned quickly

❌ But be aware:

  • Some sheds have damage from neglect or misuse
  • No warranty is provided
  • They’re typically final sale and first-come, first-served

Common Questions About Repo Sheds

âť“ Are repo sheds inspected before resale?

Most of the time, repo sheds are visually inspected when they come back to the lot, but they are not refurbished unless specified. They are sold as-is, and any repairs or improvements will need to be handled by the buyer.

‍

âť“ Can I finance a repo shed?

Yes! Many dealers (including us) offer Rent-to-Own options even on repo buildings. Just keep in mind that the terms may be shorter depending on the age or condition of the shed.

‍

âť“ How is the price determined?

The price of a repo shed depends on:

  • Its original retail price
  • How long the previous owner made payments
  • Its current condition

Older sheds or those with signs of wear are typically discounted more.

  • Ask about the building's age and any known history
  • Check for leaks, rot, or frame damage
